Application Process

The University of Arkansas Rich Mountain Upward Bound and Upward Bound Math/Science Program works with eligible students from seven target high schools; Acorn, Caddo Hills, Cossatot River, Mena, Mt. Ida, Oden, and Waldron. Students from these schools in the 9th or 10th grade should apply. Students must meet additional eligibility requirements from the U.S. Department of Education. If you would like to apply, please see your high school counselor to pick up an application. The application includes student information, parent information, a short biographical essay, and four faculty recommendation forms. Staff will also review the student’s grades and test scores.

Please return your completed application (student and parent information) to your school counselor. An incomplete application may delay the application process. You can also mail the application to our office.

Interview Process

Upward Bound staff will contact the student by phone or email with the information provided on the application packet. The staff will then interview the student either at the high school or the Upward Bound office on the University of Arkansas Rich Mountain campus. The interview is an informal experience and should not be feared by the interviewee. The student and one parent/guardian must be present during the interview. After completing the interview, the staff will review the application, grades, and test scores. If the student is accepted, they will receive a packet in the mail with their commitment forms, start date, and all necessary information to get started in Upward Bound.

Probation/Commitment Period

All Upward Bound students must complete a 60-day probation/commitment period. During this time, the student must attend all UB activities, including a weekly afterschool session, all Saturday events, and tutoring once a week. If the student is admitted in the summer, he/she must attend a two-week commitment/probation period during the summer academy. The only absences excused are school activities, and a note from the school advisor must be provided. After 60 days, if the student has maintained good attendance and behavior, they will become a full Upward Bound member. However, if good attendance or behavior is not maintained or the student decides not to participate, eligibility to become an Upward Bound member will be evaluated.

How much will it cost?

There is no cost to students or families, just the investment of time and interest in your future. Upward Bound and Upward Bound Math/Science are 100% federally funded by the U.S. Department of Education.
