Blackboard Instructor Checklist
Prior to each new semester
- Set any open course sections from previous semesters to private (hidden from students).
View the course, click “Student’s can access this course” or “Student’s can view content, but can’t participate”, then choose “Make course private”.
Note: The “Hide course” option on your Blackboard course list does not hide courses from students it just stops them from appearing on your own course list. - Update existing template (a.k.a master) courses as needed.
- Request new template courses as needed.
- Request creation of upcoming course sections.
- If you do not request your Blackboard class sections, they will be copied out automatically
5 days prior to the class start date (either as blank classes or using IT’s best guess
of template).
- If you do not request your Blackboard class sections, they will be copied out automatically
5 days prior to the class start date (either as blank classes or using IT’s best guess
of template).
Waiting until the automatic course copy date is not required. You can request course creation at any time by submitting an IT work order or contacting blackboardhelpUARICHMOUNTAIN
After course creation
- Review new course sections.
Are all expected sections in Blackboard? Does their content look as expected? Are due dates and content visibility settings correct? Are students enrolled? Make sure there are no assignments with past-dated due dates.
Note: If you teach concurrent high school students each high school with students in the class should initially have its own section in Blackboard. If a high school section is missing check with IT. - Request any desired section merges.
Classes taught concurrently in Blackboard can be combined by IT upon request. However, this must be done before students submit any assignments (recommended before opening the class). - Open your course(s) to students (recommended on or shortly before the class start
date).
Your courses will be invisible to students until this step is completed. View the course, click “Student’s can’t access this course” on the left sidebar, then choose “Open to students”.
After class ends
- Close the ended class section(s) in Blackboard (prevent student interaction).
Students can still view closed classes but will no longer be able to post or make submissions to them. View the course, click “Student’s can access this course”, then choose “Complete course”.
